Imagery of the Bible

four horsemen of the apocolyse

Often reading and understanding the Bible can be challenging as the Bible uses imagery to explain happenings including these happenings which we have described here. This is quite so of the book of Revelation (the last book of the Bible). Perhaps you could even say more so of the book of Revelation. What follows is our outline of Revelation events with a brief interpretation. We hope this helps.

Revelation talks of the Seven Seals. These seals are found on a scroll, in Heaven, which has been sealed by seven wax seals just as you would find on an old-fashioned letter. The bringing-out of this scroll illustrates Jesus Christ getting ready to take back the Earth from evil.

Jesus takes the scroll from the Father (which of course is God) and as each of the seven seals is broken, the judgement of God will be poured upon evil people left on Earth.

There is a period from when the first seal is broken, during which there will be much turbulence and upheaval on Earth, until when the last seal is broken which is the moment Jesus will return.

Please remember, God has been very patient with mankind. He has continued to love us all, for thousands of years, but there comes a time when God needs to deal with those who are still evil.

As the first seal is broken, the first servant of Heaven summons the first horse to ride upon the Earth.  You may have heard the term “Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse”, well this is the first of these four. These four horses and riders are symbols of the events which will take place on Earth. Each of the four will come one after the other during the Tribulation period. They are as follow:

Possible Steps...

mark of the beast
  1. The White Horse carrying the man of deception. This is the coming world leader, the Antichrist. Here, The Bible gives further imagery about the coming of the Antichrist. If we look at the book of the Bible, Revelation, chapter 13, verse 1 it tells us: “And I saw a beast coming out of the sea. It had ten horns and seven heads, with ten crowns on its horns, and on each head a blasphemous name.” This represents the rise of 10 countries which will support the Antichrist in his work and eventually will be ruled by the Antichrist prior to him taking-over the world.

  2. The Red Horse removes all peace on Earth – the coming of war.

  3. The Black Horse brings hunger, economic strife and disaster.

  4. The Pale Horse brings disease and death.

At this point the first four seals have been broken on the scroll.

The breaking of the fifth seal represents the attempted murder of those who believe in Jesus.

The breaking of the sixth seal represents devastating Earthquakes.

The seventh seal represents more. This is the sounding of seven trumpets. The sound of each trumpet allows a bowlful of judgements to be poured onto the wicked of the world.

Trumpet One: hail, fire and blood will pour out of the sky burning a third of trees and vegetation, wildlife will die, bodies will decay and there will be ecological disaster. Whatever type of matter, fire or weaponry forms the raining down from the sky, the result will be a biological and environmental catastrophe.

Trumpet Two: the Bible describes a mountain being hurled into the sea with a third of the water turning into blood killing a third of sealife and destroying a third of ships. Navies and merchant ships will be crippled, foods from the sea will be scarce and food supplies affected. This mountain may be literal or it could be a huge land slide resulting in a massive tsunami with resulting widespread pollution from decay of things killed and destroyed. Whichever the catalyst, whatever the components, the outcome will be devastation.

Trumpet Three: the Bible tells us that a torch-like star falls from the sky turning a third of the water foul, bitter and poisonous. Again this could be literal or it could be a nuclear missile. This possibility does not demand too much imagination.

Trumpet Four: the Bible tells us the sun, moon and stars loose a third of their illumination. Might this be the consequence of the exchange of nuclear weapons? We do not know but we can show you the internet’s description of a nuclear winter: “A period of abnormal darkness following nuclear war caused by a layer of smoke and dust in the atmosphere.” See book of the Bible Matthew chapter 24, verse 29.

Trumpet Five: Book of the Bible Revelation, chapter 9, verses 3-5 describes creatures like Locusts which will inflict pain on human beings resulting in agony which lasts 5 months. We do not have many ideas here but I do not wish to be around. Perhaps these could be drones?

Trumpet Six: Book of the Bible Revelation, chapter 16, verse 12  describes armies of 200 million troops to kill a third of the remaining world’s population. “At this time the Angel poured out his bowl on the river Euphrates.” The river will dry-up which could allow armies from Asia to cross. The Euphrates has been a natural barrier throughout the millennia. With the river dried-up, this natural barrier is no longer a factor, allowing armies to cross. Even now the water levels of the Euphrates are at historic lows with scientific estimates telling us that the river could completely dry. Please note however this is an earthly estimate and not a divine timeline. We repeat only God knows when events will play-out.

Trumpet Seven: The pouring-out of this allows 7 Angels to pour-out 7 bowls of wrath onto the Earth – see book of the Bible Revelation, chapter 16.

Bowl 1 gives loathsome sores to humanity. With chaos, disruption, war and shortages there is likely to be disease and illness which cannot be treated.

Bowl 2 turns the sea to blood killing everything left in it. With pollution now at an unprecedented level, seas will die.

Bowl 3: now rivers and springs turn to blood. Following the great pollution of the seas it is natural such pollution with reach the rivers.

Bowl 4: there is now intense heat from the sun and on Earth everyone will be burnt. See book of the Bible Malachi, chapter 4, verse 1. We ask this: If we are seeing Earth temperatures already heading in this direction, is this relevant? We do not have an answer, only a question.

Bowl 5: there will be blackness in Satan’s kingdom; the sun will be darkened and the moon will not give its light. See book of the Bible Joel, chapter 2, verse 31. Again this could be literal of it could be smoke rising from burning carnage from war, natural disaster or volcanic eruption.

Bowl 6: the pouring out of bowl six represents possibly the most widely known term: Armageddon. This we believe is literal with the gathering of the armies of the world for the final battle against Israel and God. Driven by antisemitism – which we see rising in our world today - those countries and terrorist organisations which hate Israel will try to go for a final push to destroy the Jewish people. The term Armageddon has been in the Bible for a very long time indeed. Armageddon comes from ancient city of Megiddo which is about 18 miles southeast of Haifa in Israel.

Bowl 7: this indicates ultimate devastation with massive earthquakes (possibly by nuclear exchanges) and all matter of things raining down onto the Earth. This will be the final destruction of Earth as we know it.

Yet still there is good news despite all which will happen. At the end of this, Jesus will return during the Second Coming. He will judge everyone left on Earth. How will those people know it is Jesus returning? Simple. Everyone will see him in the sky. If we look at book of the Bible Matthew chapter 24 verse 30, we read “Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven ……. and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of Heaven with power and great glory.” This is how people will know it is Jesus who is returning. Avoid what some might tell you when they tell you Jesus is here or Jesus is there.
